During the last 12 months top-tier hospitals throughout the nation struggled with the intensifying financial burden brought on by the Balanced Budget Act of 1997 and the growth of managed care. Yet throughout the year, BWH staved off threats and once again emerged among the nation’s best hospitals, making the U. S. News and World Report’s Top 10 list, along with its sister institution, MGH. In addition, BWH earned a place on HCIA’s Top 100 list of hospitals for the seventh consecutive year—the only hospital in the nation to do so. Such achievements in the midst of great challenges underscored the talent, dedication, and diversity of BWH staff and employees as efforts to strengthen our core values of quality patient care, research leadership, teaching excellence, and community contribution continued to grow.
